Welcome! I am so happy you chose to gather around my table. My name is Mia Swinehart and I am a registered dietitian with a passion for simple healthy recipes, women's hormonal health, and overall wellness!
If there’s one recipe I think everyone should have in their back pocket, it’s a good classic meatball recipe. These gluten-free classic meatballs are tender, juicy, packed with flavor, and made with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand. They’re the kind of meatballs that work for just about any occasion, whether you’re making a cozy Sunday dinner or just need an easy weeknight meal.
I love using a combination of ground beef and ground pork because you get the best of both worlds. The beef brings that classic meatball flavor, while the pork adds extra tenderness and juiciness. Parmesan, fresh parsley, garlic, and a few simple seasonings bring everything together.
The best part? These meatballs simmer right in marinara sauce until they’re heated through and full of flavor. You can use your favorite homemade marinara or grab a jar from the store to keep things simple. Just make sure to use gluten-free Italian breadcrumbs and check your other ingredients if you need the entire recipe to be gluten-free.
Why You’ll Love These Meatballs
Classic flavor: Garlic, Parmesan, parsley, and Italian seasoning flavors make these meatballs taste like the real deal.
Tender and juicy: The combination of beef and pork creates meatballs that are flavorful without being dry.
Easy to make gluten-free: Simply use gluten-free Italian breadcrumbs!
Perfect for meal prep: Make a batch ahead of time for easy dinners throughout the week. You can also prep the meatballs the day before, store in the refrigerator, and make them the next day.
So versatile: Serve them over gluten-free pasta, with creamy polenta, alongside roasted vegetables, on a bed of mashed potatoes, or on their own with plenty of marinara sauce.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Ground beef: I use one pound of ground beef as the base for these meatballs.
Ground pork: Another pound of ground pork adds moisture and flavor. I recommend using both meats for the best texture.
Egg: Helps bind everything together so the meatballs hold their shape.
Fresh parsley: Adds freshness and classic Italian flavor.
Parmesan cheese: Freshly grated Parmesan adds a salty, savory flavor throughout the meatballs.
Italian breadcrumbs: Use gluten-free Italian breadcrumbs to keep this recipe gluten-free. The breadcrumbs help create a tender texture.
Milk: Moistens the breadcrumbs and helps keep the meatballs soft.
Garlic: Four cloves of minced garlic give these meatballs plenty of flavor.
Sea salt and black pepper: Simple seasonings that bring everything together.
Marinara sauce: Use homemade marinara or your favorite jarred sauce to simmer the meatballs.
Tips for the Best Meatballs
Don’t overmix the meat. Mix just until the ingredients are incorporated to keep the meatballs tender.
Use a combination of meats. Ground beef and pork together give these meatballs a great balance of flavor and moisture.
Let the breadcrumbs soak up the milk. This helps distribute moisture throughout the mixture and gives the meatballs a softer texture.
Keep the sauce at a gentle simmer. A low, steady simmer helps the meatballs cook evenly without breaking apart.
Check your labels. For a fully gluten-free meal, make sure your breadcrumbs and marinara sauce are certified or labeled gluten-free as needed.
What to Serve with Classic Meatballs
There are so many ways to serve these meatballs! Here are a few of my favorites:
Gluten-free spaghetti or your favorite gluten-free pasta
Creamy Parmesan polenta
Roasted broccoli or green beans
A simple green salad with Italian dressing
Garlic bread made with gluten-free bread
Creamy mashed potatoes for a cozy, comforting dinner
How to Store and Reheat
Refrigerator: Store leftover meatballs in an airtight container with the marinara sauce for up to 3–4 days.
Freezer: Let the meatballs and sauce cool completely, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months for an easy meal later on.
Reheating: Reheat the meatballs gently in a saucepan over medium-low heat until warmed through, adding a splash of water if the sauce has thickened too much. You can also microwave individual portions in a microwave-safe dish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use only ground beef?
Absolutely. You can replace the ground pork with another pound of ground beef. The flavor and texture may be slightly different, but the recipe will still work.
Do I need to brown the meatballs before adding them to the sauce?
Nope! These meatballs can simmer directly in the marinara sauce, which keeps the process simple and saves you from dirtying another pan. Just handle them gently when adding them to the sauce.
Can I make the meatballs ahead of time?
Yes! You can mix and shape the meatballs a day ahead and keep them covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to cook them. You can also cook the entire recipe ahead of time and reheat the meatballs in the sauce when you’re ready to serve.
Serving suggestion: Serve over creamy mashed potatoes like I did here, or of course over gluten-free pasta with extra Parmesan for a simple, comforting dinner the whole family can enjoy.
