Classic Italian baked artichoke hearts, with a little twist! An added layer of marinara sauce makes these crispy baked artichoke hearts extra saucy and flavorful for the most perfect veggie side dish!

This recipe is so perfect to bring to any holiday table. This gluten free version of baked artichokes is full of so much flavor, texture, and nutrients. It makes me so nostalgic for an artichoke dish my mom always made growing up that I loved so much!

It also happens to be an incredibly easy recipe to make, too! So simple, yet so incredibly delicious. Such a crowd-pleasing recipe, too!

These baked artichokes start with a base of marinara sauce, then get layered with artichoke hearts, a breadcrumb and parmesan mixture, and some olive oil and lemon juice. It has a perfect balance of flavor, and makes the best savory veggie-based side dish!

Artichokes happen to be high in fiber and vitamins/minerals, making this side dish even better! It’s a great healthier option to add to your holiday dinners, and also makes great leftovers. Because the Thanksgiving leftovers are my FAVORITE part!! Anyone else?!

Can I make these with regular breadcrumbs?

Yes! If you don’t need this recipe to be gluten free, feel free to use your favorite breadcrumbs here!

Can this be made dairy free?

I wouldn’t recommend it! You’ll need the parmesan as part of the breading mixture for the perfect savory flavor and balance of textures. You can always try experimenting with a vegan parmesan, but I think the final result will likely be different and I haven’t tested it myself!

You don’t need any special equipment for this recipe. It is so easy to make! You’ll just need some measuring cups/spoons, mixing bowls, and a 9×13″ baking dish!

In addition to being gluten free, this recipe also happens to be:

  • Nut free
  • Egg free
  • Soy free
  • Vegetarian

I promise everyone you make this for will absolutely love this dish! 🙂

I can’t wait to hear what you think of this one! Be sure to let me know in the comments below if you give these baked artichokes a try! I am so excited for this recipe to be on your holiday tables! Enjoy! xo

Description

The best gluten free baked artichokes with a layer of delicious marinara.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (25 oz) jar of marinara
  • 3 (14 oz) cans of quartered artichoke hearts, drained
  • 1 + 1/4 cup gluten free Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tbsp Italian seasonings
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Pinch of red pepper flake
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 3 cloves of garlic

Instructions

  1. Allow your artichokes to drain for a few minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl mix together your breadcrumbs, parmesan, Italian seasonings, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, and minced garlic.
  4. Preheat your oven to 325°F.
  5. Spread your jar of marinara sauce across the bottom of a 9×13″ baking dish. Lay out one layer of artichoke hearts, sprinkle with half of the breadcrumb mixture (artichokes should be almost entirely covered), and drizzle with half of the olive oil and lemon juice mixture. Repeat for a second layer of artichokes, breadcrumbs, and olive oil mixture.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 375°F, uncover, and bake for another 25-30 minutes, or until the top is slightly browned. Serve and enjoy; leftovers can be reheated at 375°F until heated through.
